This creamy dairy-free ranch dressing is made with blanched almonds, hemp seeds, lemon, herbs, and extra virgin olive oil. It has a fresh, tangy flavor and can be adjusted from a thick dip to a pourable salad dressing. It’s also naturally gluten-free, cashew-free, soy-free, and lectin-free.
A creamy ranch dressing without dairy or cashews
Traditional ranch dressing is usually made with buttermilk, often combined with sour cream or mayonnaise. Dairy-free versions frequently rely on cashews, soy-based products, or coconut milk — but none of those options worked particularly well for what I wanted. Cashews and soy are not part of my diet, while coconut can be overpowering in a savory dressing like ranch.
Since I often make hemp milk at home, I decided to use hemp seeds as part of the creamy base. They have a mild flavor, blend easily, and pair well with blanched almonds, which give the dressing more body and a smoother texture.
Lemon juice and apple cider vinegar provide the characteristic tang, while garlic, onion, parsley, chives, and dill create that familiar ranch flavor.
How to make dairy-free ranch dressing
Soak the blanched almonds in filtered water for a few hours, then drain them before making the dressing. This softens the almonds and helps them blend into a smoother consistency.
Add the soaked almonds to a high-powered blender with the hemp seeds and remaining ingredients. Blend until smooth and creamy, adding more water gradually if needed. Use less water for a thick ranch dip or add a little more for a pourable salad dressing.
Taste before serving and adjust with additional lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, salt, or pepper.

Fresh or dried herbs
Dried chives and dill make this dressing convenient to prepare year-round, but you can use fresh herbs when available. Fresh herbs will give the ranch a brighter flavor and a hint of color.
You can also replace the fresh garlic and onion with garlic and onion powder for a milder flavor and an even smoother dressing.
Ways to use dairy-free ranch dressing
This dairy-free ranch is versatile enough to use as a dressing, sauce, dip, or even a marinade. Serve it with raw vegetables, drizzle it over salads or roasted vegetables, or pair it with my Mustard Sage Crispy Wing Platter.

It also works beautifully in a cauliflower salad. Combine cooked and cooled cauliflower with chickpeas or roasted sweet potato, grated carrots, chopped parsley, Kalamata olives, and a generous amount of ranch dressing. Finish with lemon juice or apple cider vinegar, extra virgin olive oil, salt, and pepper.
You can also use the dressing as a base for other sauces by blending it with avocado, mustard, roasted peppers, or additional fresh herbs.
